Himachal is the most-booked long holiday out of Gujarat, and the trip has a shape that repeats: an overnight train to Chandigarh, then road. Getting the planning right mostly comes down to four decisions — when to go, how many days, which route, and how you handle the train.
Getting there from Ahmedabad
The practical route is Gandhinagar to Chandigarh by train, overnight, then road onward into the hills. Chandigarh to Shimla is a morning’s drive. From there the circuit runs down the Parvati valley to Kasol, up to Manali, and — on the longer version — across to Dalhousie and out through Amritsar.
Travel class is the main fare lever. On our 8-day departure the tiers run from a Chandigarh-to-Chandigarh land-only fare at ₹11,499 up to ₹15,999 with 2AC train travel both ways. Sleeper non-AC at ₹12,499 is what most families take.
When to go
- September to November — clear skies, comfortable days, good visibility. The best photography window and the easiest travelling.
- December to February — snow season. This is what most Gujarat travellers actually want, and it is the busiest and priciest period. Roads to high passes may be shut; snow points shift to whatever is open.
- March and April — snow still lying at altitude, fewer crowds, softer prices. Quietly the best value window.
Peak dates carry supplements. Ours are marked on the departure calendar: on the 8-day trip, 7–14 November and 16 December to 15 January add ₹2,000 per person; on the 11-day Full Himachal, specific dates in November, December and January add ₹4,000.
How many days you actually need
Two overnight train journeys eat two days at each end of the trip. Budget accordingly:
- 8 days — Shimla, Kullu, Manali and Kasol. Five hotel nights, two train nights. The sensible minimum for a first Himachal trip.
- 11 days — adds Dalhousie, Khajjiar and Amritsar with the Golden Temple and the Wagah border ceremony. Eight hotel nights. Worth it if you can take the leave.
Anything shorter than eight days from Gujarat means you spend a disproportionate share of the holiday travelling.
Book around the IRCTC window
This is the one piece of timing that is not flexible. IRCTC opens reservations 60 days before travel, at 8:00 AM. No travel agent holds a separate quota, and seat allotment is IRCTC’s system, not anyone’s discretion. For December departures that means booking in October.
If you are booking a train-inclusive package, the deposit needs to be with the agency before that window opens, not after.
What a realistic budget looks like
For a fixed-departure group tour from Gandhinagar, expect ₹12,000 to ₹19,000 per person depending on trip length and train class. On top of the fare, budget separately for:
- Monument entry fees and guide charges
- Adventure activities — paragliding, skiing, ATV rides
- Snow suit and boot hire in Manali, and pony rides
- Hotel heater charges, which are commonly billed separately in winter
- Lunches, which are usually not included
- The local taxi up to Jakhoo Temple in Shimla — around ₹200 to ₹250 per person, because the group vehicle cannot make the climb
A realistic spending allowance is ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 per person over the fare.
Snow points are conditional
Solang Valley, Sissu, Kokhsar and Rohtang all sit behind permits and weather. On any given date one of them will be open and the others may not be. The Atal Tunnel is visited when it is open. Where the tempo traveller cannot continue, you switch to a local 4×4 at your own cost.
Plan for snow, but do not plan for a specific pass on a specific day.
What to pack
- A proper warm or thermal jacket — not a Gujarat-winter jacket
- Gloves, a woollen cap and thick socks
- Sports or trekking shoes with grip; snow is slippery and ordinary shoes are not enough
- Sunglasses — snow glare is real
- Prescribed medicines, plus something for travel sickness on hill roads
- Power bank, water bottle, raincoat or umbrella
- Government photo ID for every traveller
Travelling with children and older parents
The standard Himachal circuits are graded easy — sightseeing, short walks, no trekking. Children aged 5 to 10 travel at a reduced fare on group departures. The parts to think about for older travellers are the long transfer days and the altitude at snow points, both of which are optional to sit out.
